What exactly are preservatives and should you be avoiding them in your skincare?
Preservatives are ingredients added to skincare products to prevent mold, bacteria, and fungi. Without them, certain products could become unstable and spoil quickly.
So...what's the problem?
Not all preservatives are created equal. Many mainstream products use synthetic preservatives, some of which have been linked to irritation, allergic reactions, and even long-term health concerns.
Here are some to look out for:
Parabens
Linked to hormone disruption and may accumulate in the body over time
Commonly found in facial cleansers, moisturizers, and body lotions
Phenoxyethanol
Can irritate the skin and eye and is toxic to the nervous system in high concentrations
Commonly found in toners, serums, eye cream, and sunscreen
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Recognized as a carcinogen
Commonly found in body washes and soaps *often hidden in long, hard-to-pronounce names
BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene)
potential disruptor of endocrin, which produces and releases hormones
Found in creams and lip products
Synthetic fragrance preservatives
"fragrance" or "parfum" often hide dozens of undiscolsed chemical compounds that can cause sensitivity and damage the skin barrier
How can you avoid preservatives in skincare?
Avoiding potentially harmful preservatives doesn’t mean giving up on effective skincare, it just means becoming a more informed consumer!
Here are some ways to reduce your exposure:
Check the ingredient list: Look out for known synthetic preservatives like parabens, phenoxyethanol, BHT, and anything that sounds like a formaldehyde releaser (e.g., DMDM hydantoin or quaternium-15).
Prioritize minimalist formulas: Products with shorter, simpler ingredient lists tend to skip unnecessary additives. Look for clean formulations that rely on plant-based actives and naturally derived preservatives like fermented extracts, vitamin E, or essential oils.
Choose small-batch & preservative-free brands: Brands that use airless packaging, dry powder formulas, or single-use formats can avoid synthetic preservatives altogether. These methods naturally protect the product without the use of harsh chemicals.
Use your products fresh: Preservative-free skincare often has a shorter shelf life, but that’s not a bad thing! It means there are fewer synthetic stabilizers and more potent ingredients. Be mindful of expiration dates and follow storage instructions closely.
