If your skincare routine feels a little lacklustre, exfoliation might be the missing step. When done right, it can help transform your skin from rough and congested to soft, radiant, and visibly clearer. But exfoliation isn’t just about scrubbing—it’s about knowing how and when to do it. Here’s a simple guide to help you get started!

What is exfoliation and why does it matter?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Without regular exfoliation, those dead cells can accumulate, leading to dullness, clogged pores, and uneven texture. Gently clearing them away helps to reveal fresh, healthy skin underneath and allows your products to work more effectively.

Benefits of Regular Exfoliation include:

  • A brighter, more even skin tone

  • Smoother texture and softer feel

  • Better absorption of serums and moisturizers

  • Fewer breakouts and less congestion

  • A refreshed, youthful glow

Types of Exfoliation: Physical vs. Chemical

There are two main approaches to exfoliation—physical and chemical. Both can be effective when used appropriately, depending on your skin type and goals.

Physical Exfoliation - This method uses small particles or textured tools to manually lift away dead skin cells. Common examples include face scrubs, exfoliating cloths, and brushes.

Physical Exfoliation is Best Suited for:

  • Normal to oily skin types

  • Those who enjoy an immediate, smooth-to-the-touch effect

Tip: Always use gentle, rounded exfoliants and avoid harsh scrubbing. Limit physical exfoliation to 1–2 times a week to avoid irritation or damage to your skin barrier.

Chemical Exfoliation - Instead of scrubbing, chemical exfoliants work by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells using active ingredients like acids or enzymes. There are many kinds of common exfoliants, popular ones include AHAs, such as glycolic or lactic acid (best for dry and dull skin), and BHAs, like salicylic acid (best for oily, acne-prone skin)

Chemical Exfoliation is Best Suited for:

  • Sensitive or breakout-prone skin

  • Even exfoliation with minimal friction

Tip: Exfoliated skin is more sensitive to sunlight, be sure to follow with SPF during the day.
